Typhoon Kalmaegi is heading towards the East Sea and expected to cause strong wind and rough seas after sweeping through the Philippines, meteorologists have warned.
East Sea is the Vietnamese term for the South China Sea.
According to Vietnam’s National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecast, the typhoon has strengthened since Saturday and was located at about 120 kilometers east of Luzon Island at 1 p.m. Sunday.
The typhoon is heading towards the Philippines with strong winds of up to 133 kph.
It is moving with speeds from 20-25 kph and can get even stronger and is forecast to sweep into the East Sea on Sunday night.
At 1 p.m. on Monday, the storm eye is expected to be 640 km between east and northeast of Vietnam’s Hoang Sa (Paracel) Islands.
The typhoon may sweep further between north and northwest towards China’s Hainan Island at 1 p.m. on September 16.
The storm is moving fast and looks unpredictable, meteorologists warned.
Fewer but stronger typhoons are expected to hit Vietnam this year ahead of a harsh drought brought on by El Niño conditions, meteorologists have predicted.
The country may suffer from 5-6 typhoons this year, they said.
Heavy rains and flashfloods triggered by Typhoon Rammasun killed at least 27 people in Vietnam’s northern highlands last July.
