APEC CEO Summit opens in Beijing

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit commenced in Beijing , China on November 9 as part of the week-long APEC meeting.


In his opening speech, Chinese President Xi Jinping highlighted the Asian-Pacific region’s economic growth and potential as an active contribution to global economic development.


Representing approximately 40 percent of the world’s population, 57 percent of global economic output and 48 percent of total trade, the Asian-Pacific region has entered a new stage of development in terms of finance, technology, information and personnel exchanges, with increasingly closer links between the region’s economies, Xi added.



He also pointed out the challenges of the global economic crises and slow recovery in a number of economies in the region, while stressing the need to enhance the quality and efficiency of regional economies through reliable partnerships and mutual benefits.


Xi suggested the regional economies seek new ways to grow and develop plans for comprehensive ties.


The APEC CEO Summit is an important economic forum that brings the leaders of APEC member economies and leading global business executives together.


Under the banner of “Shaping the future through the Asia-Pacific Partnership”, this year’s meeting will focus on issues on connectivity, the birth of a regional free trade area, and emerging concerns in economic and trade collaboration.


As many as 15 documents are expected to be approved, including a statement of senior officials and a joint statement of the ministerial meeting.


The 21-member organisation comprises 12 economies currently negotiating the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement, including Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the United States and Vietnam, along with China, Hong Kong (China), Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Russia, Taiwan (China) and Thailand.-VNA
