Defence Minister’s activities in ADMM Retreat

PANO – Minister of National Defence General Phung Quang Thanh on November 18th met his Myanmar counterpart and Brunei’s Energy Minister on the sideline of the ongoing ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) Retreat in Bagan, Myanmar.

The Vietnamese Defence Minister told his Myanmar counterpart, Lieutenant General Wai Lwin that Vietnam highly appreciated Myanmar’s chairing of ASEAN and ADMM meeting over the past year and highlighted active contributions of Myanmar, as the ASEAN chairman, to the success of ASEAN meetings and ADMM, especially the 25th ASEAN Summit early this month.



General Thanh also underlined the cultural similarities between the two countries, and held that Vietnam and Myanmar have reached political trust; thus, Vietnam would like to receive more support from Myanmar in regional and international forums, particularly the 24th ASEAN Armies Rifle Meet (AARM-24), the 15th ASEAN Chiefs of Army Multilateral Meeting (ACAMM-15), and the 4th ASEAN Sergeant Major Annual Meeting (ASMAM-4) to be hosted by Vietnam late this month.


For his part, Lieutenant General Wai Lwin spoke high of Vietnam’s role in ASEAN and ADMM, and confirmed that the success of the 25th ASEAN Summit was thanked to the active contributions by all the ASEAN members, including Vietnam.


The Myanmar general also noted that the economic cooperation between Myanmar and Vietnam would help foster the bilateral defence cooperation and expressed his belief in Vietnam’s successful organization of the coming ASEAN’s military events in the country.


In the meeting betwwen General Thanh and Brunei Energy Minister Pehin Yasmin, the two sides confirmed their support for each other in multilateral forums, especially those within the framework of ASEAN, ADMM and ADMM+. General Phung Quang Thanh and Brunei Energy Minister Pehin Yasmin agreed to enhance Vietnam-Brunei cooperation in training, navy and exchanges of delegations at all levels.


The Brunei minister took this occasion to thank Vietnam for its supporting Brunei over the past time and giving the warm welcome to Brunei officers during their visit to the Vietnam National Defence Academy this May and hoped to receive Vietnam’s support and Vietnam’s delegations joining a shooting event and defence exhibition held next year in Brunei.


General Thanh agreed to send Vietnamese delegations to both events.


Later in the evening, General Thanh and the Vietnamese high-ranking military delegation participated in a banquet hosted by Myanmar Minister of Defence and his wife.
