Vietnam continued to be the biggest pepper producer and exporter worldwide for the fourteenth consecutive year with their products appearing in 100 countries and territories, the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA) said.

According to the VPA, the country shipped only 50,000 tonnes of pepper in 2001, valued at USD90 million but by 2013 the volume had increased to 133,000 tonnes, worth USD900 million.

In the first half of 2014, Vietnam earned nearly USD800 million from exporting nearly 112,000 tonnes of pepper with the export value expected to exceed USD1 billion in 2014. The largest export markets for Vietnamese pepper during the period were Europe (34%), Asia (36%), America (20%) and Africa (10%).

In spite of facing technical barriers as well as food safety hygiene standards of choosy markets such as Europe, the US and Japan; foreign traders still appreciated and paid heavy prices for Vietnamese brand-name pepper products.

Apart from defining a long-term strategy for pepper trees, the Vietnamese pepper sector would rather focus on improving the quality of products and ensuring food safety hygiene standards than expanding production areas, said Do Ha Nam, VPA Chairman. In addition, more investment in processing infrastructure and diversifying products to meet the increasing demand of the market are necessary for the sector, he added./.
