Jetstar Pacific is slated to start deploying an Airbus A320 aircraft equipped with fuel-saving Sharklet wing tips for its services on Thursday, the low-cost carrier announced after receiving the jetliner a day earlier.
The Sharklet-equipped aircraft arrived at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday, bringing the number of planes owned by the airline to eight.
The Sharklet is a bent-back wing tip design which offers fuel savings of about 3.5 percent and cuts CO2 emissions by some 700 tons a year.
The new blended winglet design, intended to enhance the payload-range performance of the A320 family, was launched and named “Sharklet” by Airbus in 2009, according to the French planemaker’s website.
Jetstar Pacific general director Le Hong Ha said the carrier will increase its fleet size to 10 airplanes before Tet – or Vietnam’s Lunar New Year – which falls on February 19.
The budget carrier has recently launched two new services, Hanoi – Vinh and Ho Chi Minh City – Singapore.
It is poised to begin offering the Ho Chi Minh City – Bangkok service on December 10.
