Boosting bilateral relation between Laos and Vietnam

The Hanoitimes – Deputy Prime Minister cum Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh and his Lao counterpart Thoongloun Sisoulith examined ways to further bilateral ties and shared their views on regional and international issues of common concern at their talks in Vientiane on December 4.


The two Deputy PMs expressed their delight at the more effective and substantial ties of the time-honoured friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Laos, confirming the resolve to strengthen exchange visits by senior leaders and implement the existing cooperation mechanisms between the two nations.

The two sides agreed to ensure the effective operation of “one-stop-shop” model at the Lao Bao-Densavan international border gate in accordance with signed agreements which will become effective as of January 1, 2015.


The leaders informed each other about the external situation in their respective country and compared notes on a number of regional and international issues of shared concern such as the situation in the Asia – Pacific region and the process of building an ASEAN Community.


They pledged close coordination with other ASEAN member countries to build the ASEAN Community by 2015 as a contribution to peace, stability and prosperity in the region. Immediately after the talks, the two diplomats signed a cooperation agreement between the two foreign ministries for the 2014 – 2020 period.


During the visit from December 4-5, Deputy PM Minh paid courtesy visits to Lao General Secretary and State President Choummaly Sayasone, and Prime Minister Thongsinh Thammavong. The Lao leaders pledged to foster the traditional friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries.


Party leader Chummaly Sayasone noted with satisfaction the growing ties between the two parties, believing that the two sides will work harder for the success of the congress of each party in 2016. Meanwhile, PM Thongsing Thammavong hailed the joint preparations for the 37th meeting of the Vietnam-Laos Inter-Governmental Committee in 2015.
