The Vietnam – Denmark Friendship Association and the Embassy of Denmark in Vietnam hosted a ceremony to celebrate the 43rd anniversary of Vietnam – Denmark diplomatic relations (November 25, 1971 – 2014) in Hanoi on November 25, 2014.

Speaking at the event, Mr Tran Hong Ha, Chairman of Vietnam – Denmark Friendship Association, said Denmark staged strong democracy movements in support of Vietnam during the Vietnam War. Denmark was one of the first Western countries to establish formal diplomatic relations with Vietnam. The two countries have reaped a lot of important achievements since the official diplomatic ties were set up in 1971. Bilateral trade turnover reached US$450 million in 2013. Denmark was one of the first Nordic countries to invest in Vietnam and is now ranked 25th out of 101 countries and territories investing in Vietnam. Many projects on education, training and cultural cooperation have been carried out. In development cooperation, Denmark is one of the first Western European countries to provide the official development assistance (ODA) for Vietnam and is among the largest ODA donor for the country. Danish aid focuses on infrastructure construction, poverty reduction, sustainable development, administrative reform, environmental protection and adaptation to climate change. Denmark is currently the leading aid donor for Vietnam’s response to climate change.

Also at the ceremony, Danish Embassy to Vietnam John Nielsen expressed his pleasure at achievements in all areas that the two countries have made over the past 43 years. The scope of cooperation is being diversified. The sustainable development has been built by the Governments, business partners, artists, athletes and other forces of the two countries. People-to-people diplomacy is also developed. Currently, Vietnam and Denmark are building a new closer relationship based on political dialogue, green growth, clean technology, culture education and training. In the coming time, Denmark hopes to support Vietnam by providing it with products and knowledge necessary for economic restructuring towards a greener economy.

He also expressed his pleasure at the “Thinking Green-Thinking Denmark” Essay Contest as it drew the interest of students at Nguyen Sieu High School. On this occasion, the Embassy of Denmark awarded a special prize and two consolation prizes to winning students. The special prize is a full scholarship in Denmark in two weeks under a cooperation programme between Nguyen Sieu High School and partners in Denmark.

Mr Tran Hong Ha hoped to receive further cooperation from the Embassy of Denmark in Vietnam, thus enable the association to contribute more to bilateral ties for the sake of interests of the two peoples, peace, cooperation and sustainable development.
