4.5 million foreign visitors to Cambodia in 2014

Tourism Minister of Cambodia Thong Khon has said the country expected to welcome 4.5 million international tourists in 2014, an increase of around 6 percent from last year.

Mr. Thong Khon said of the figure, China is the second largest source of tourists to Cambodia.


“It is estimated that 550,000 Chinese tourists come to Cambodia this year, up 20 percent year-on-year,” the minister said, adding that the Southeast Asian nation has planned to attract at least 2 million Chinese tourists in 2020.


Cambodia received nearly 3.2 million foreign visitors in the first nine months of 2014. Most of visitors to Cambodia are from Vietnam, China, Republic of Korea, Laos and Thailand.


Cambodia is a country located in the southern portion of the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia. Its total landmass is 181,035 square kilometers, bordered by Thailand to the northwest, Laos to the northeast, Vietnam to the east, and the Gulf of Thailand to the southwest.


With a population of over 14.8 million, Cambodia is the 69th most populous country in the world


Cambodia is famous for two cultural sites in the UNESCO’s World Heritage List. One is the 12th century Angkor Wat Temple and the other is the 11th century Preah Vihear Temple.


Tourism is one of the four pillars supporting the economy. According to the Ministry of Tourism, the country received 4.2 million inbound tourists last year, generating about USD2.5 billion, which accounted for 16 percent to the GDP, Xinhua reported./.
