The Indonesia Transportation Ministry’s acting director general of air transportation, Djoko Murjatmodjo has confirmed that the debris discovered in Pangkalan Bun, Central Kalimantan, was from the AirAsia flight QZ8501.

“It has been confirmed that it is debris from an aircraft bearing red and white colors,” Djoko said, citing that the debris was found by the ministry’s rescue team.


Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency chief confirmed that six bodies have been recovered so far, including a flight attendant.


Body bags are being transported to Pangkalan Bun, as relatives of passengers gathered at the airport, broke down upon hearing the news of the plane’s wreckage being found.


On December 30th, Indonesian President Joko Widodo convened a press conference to announce the latest result of the search and rescue.


He expressed his deep condolences to the families of the passengers and crew members and thanked international community, especially Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, India, the UK, France, the US and the Republic of Korea for their assistance following the incident.


The President also directed units concerned to step up search and rescue and deal with post-accident issues and asked the authorities must swiftly identify the victims of the ill-fated AirAsia QZ8501 flight.


Flight QZ8501 had gone missing en route to Singapore from Surabaya, Indonesia after pilots requested a change of flight plane due to bad weather.


Flight QZ8501 with 155 passengers on board including one British, one Malaysian, one Singaporean, three Koreans and 149 Indonesians, as well as the 7 crew members including 6 Indonesians and a French co-pilot.


Sixteen children and one infant were among the passengers on board, the carrier said.


The flight left Surabaya in eastern Java at 05:35 local time and was due to arrive in Singapore at 08:30.The flight lost contact with air traffic control at 07:24 local time Indonesia on December 27th./.
