US President Barack Obama will visit India to attend India’s Republic Day celebrations on January 26th. The visit was made at the invitation of Indian Prime Minister (PM), Narendra Modi and will be the first time a US President has attended a Republic Day celebration, the White House said. Obama will participate in the Indian Republic Day celebration in New Delhi as the Chief Guest. During the meeting, Obama will meet with PM Modi and other Indian officials to “strengthen and expand the US-India strategic partnership”, White House press secretary Josh Earnest said. The Obama’s visit follows up on Modi’s debut visit to Washington as India’s leader in September last year. Negotiations between India and the US on issues like climate change, an agreement on civilian nuclear plants, military purchases, and investment and manufacturing rules will be themes for discussing during the Obama’s visit to India. On January 12th, US Secretary of State John Kerry travelled to India to attend a global investors summit and paved the way for an upcoming visit by President Obama. John Kerry called for the US and India to expand economic ties rapidly as the US official said they hope to reach agreements by the time President Barack Obama visits later this month. Two-way trade between the US and India currently stands at USD100 billion and the countries aim to boost the figure to USD500 billion but have set no deadline./. |
