PANO – A conference to review last year’s performance of defence-run economic companies and discuss their 2015 business targets was held in Hanoi on January 26th under the chair of General Phung Quang Thanh, Minister of National Defence.

In 2014, military firms thoroughly grasped and seriously implemented instructions by the Central Military Commission, Ministry of National Defence and other competent organs to fulfil their missions, overcoming difficulties.

Accordingly, they achieved the revenue of VND 292 trillion and profit of VND 46 trillion, contributed nearly VND 41 trillion to the State budget, and reached an average per capita income of VND 10.7 million per month, a year-on-year increase of 18, 15, 12 and 4.2 per cent, respectively.

The military-run telecom group Viettel continued taking the lead among defence busnesses with a turnover of VND 197 trillion, up by 20 per cent from the same period last year, and a net profit of over VND 42 trillion.

Meanwhile, the Saigon Newport Group is one of Vietnam’s leading ports, representing 80 per cent of the Southern region’s seaport market and nearly 50 per cent of the North’s.

Other defence businesses, such as the Lung Lo Construction Group, Corporations 319 and 789, Dong Bac Corporation, Housing and Urban Development Corporation, and ACC Aviation Construction Company, met their targets and became prestigious brand names in their sectors.

The Military Commercial Joint Stock Bank (MB) has grown up as one of Vietnam’s biggest commercial banks.

Besides, they actively participated in welfare activities, raised funds for charity and constructed 200 gratitude houses for families of wounded soldiers and martyrs.

Last year, the Ministry also focused on rearranging and restructuring military firms with 100 per cent of State capital, while directing them to work more efficiently. At present, they are doing business in 421 fields.

The Minister highly applauded the efforts of cadres, soldiers and employees in defence businesses over the past year, as many of them have received noble orders and merit certificates from the Party, State, ministries and local authorities in recognition of their achievements, contributing to brightening the virtues of Uncle Ho’s soldiers in particular and the image of Vietnam in the international arena in general.

He underlined 2015 is still a difficult year for businesses when Vietnam will join the ASEAN Community and sign trade agreements with foreigner partners, so defence firms should always give top priority to the nation and army’s interests, seriously implement the State laws and military regulations, increase productivity, promote human resource quality, build suitable production strategies, and well develop socio-economy in combination with national defence and security, and closely work with local authorities to effectively respond to gratitude activities for the national construction and defence cause.
