More than 800 overseas Vietnamese attended in a program to welcome New Year 2015 at Ho Chi Minh City Square last night, which was organized by the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs and Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee.

Attending in the event was Politburo member, Secretary of HCMC Party Committee Le Thanh Hai, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh, Chairman of HCMC People’s Committee Le Hoang Quan, Permanent Deputy Secretary of HCMC Party Committee Vo Van Thuong, Deputy Foreign Minister and Chairman of the State Committee on Overseas Vietnamese Affairs (COVA) Vu Hong Nam, Chairwoman of the city People’s Council Nguyen Thi Quyet Tam, the chairwoman of Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of HCMC Vo Thi Dung and other leaders.
Chairman Le Hoang Quan said that last year, Ho Chi Minh City’s GDP growth rate still remained high at over 9, 6 percent despite the city faced many economic difficulties and challenges.
The total of trade – import and export value also kept growing at a faster rate. Ho Chi Minh City is the first region nationwide which exceeded exporting turnover of over US$ 32 billion and achieved importing turnover of US$ 30, 7 billion.
This year will mark many important historic events including Vietnam’s the 70th National Day, the 85th anniversary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, and the 40th anniversary of the liberation of southern Vietnam and national reunification. Thus, the city’s authorities will focus on promoting business and product, sustainable economic grow in order to contribute to build Ho Chi Minh City as a modern and civilization city, added the Chairman.
The Chairman stressed that overseas Vietnamese always play an important role in linking Vietnam and the other countries. Particularly, in last year, thousands of overseas Vietnamese joined hand in many charitable social activities in the country.
The Party and Government appreciated highly contributions of overseas Vietnamese communities during Vietnam’s past national unification struggle, especially, in integration progress, building and protecting the country, added the chairman.
On the occasion, the Prime Minister, Ministry of Foreign Affair and HCMC People’s Committee granted certificates to groups and individuals, who had outstanding contributions to the country in last year.
