(VOV) – More than 600 overseas Vietnamese people from around the world joined a get-together in HCM City on February 7 to celebrate Lunar New Year (Tet), which is part of the ‘Homeland Spring’ programme 2015.
At the gathering, Le Hoang Quan, Chairman of the HCM City People’s Committee briefed the participants on the city’s major socio-politic, economic and cultural achievements in 2014 and development orientations
Quan stated that despites unpredictable situation in the region and the world affecting domestic socio-politic and economic situation, the country including HCM City led by the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) has overcome difficulties and obtained significant results.
Highly appreciating OVs’ contributions to the national development and integration process, Quan underscored that they serve as a bridge connecting domestic and international culture, economics and trade.
Over the past decade, HCM City has constantly improved administrative procedures and implemented incentive policies to attract OVs scientists and technicians to institutes, universities, hospitals and major projects in Vietnam.
Last year more than 756,900 OVs returned home via Tan San Nhat International Airport and foreign remittances hit more than US$5 billion.
Thousands of OVs offered donation to support flood victims, build schools for disadvantaged students and cement bridges in remote areas.
On behalf of participants, Vietnamese American David Duong expressed his sincere thanks for State and HCM City leaders for organising the event, which provided them a good chance to show their sentiment to their homeland.
On the occasion, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs presented certificates of merit to 12 organisations and 24 individuals for their contributions to developing the OVs community.
The HCM City People’s Committee also conferred certificates of merit to 1 organisation and 5 individuals for their contributions to OVs affairs.
