The season of Vietnam programs will inform audiences how the country has tried to recover from its tragic past and thrive to be one of the most dynamic societies in Asia 40 years after gaining independence.
Vietnam Direct features several topics such as how some areas have recovered from the horrific effects of Agent Orange; the rise of youth culture; the role of workers in Vietnam’s economic development and the latest technology helping to keep the country’s mode of transport on the road.
The Country Direct season gives BBC audiences worldwide the chance to see daily life in a particular country. Through BBC World News programs like Fast Track, One Square Mile and Working Lives, the BBC journalists explore issues faced by the country and its people – from the economic opportunities and challenges to living life at every level of society, to its traditions and history, future plans and innovations.
Recent Country Direct seasons have focused on Croatia, Mozambique, Canada, Georgia, Ecuador and Qatar.
Highlights of Vietnam Direct include: One Square Mile – Danang which will be aired at 7.30 p.m. (Vietnam time) on August 24 and at 7.30 a.m. and 2.30 p.m. on August 25. BBC Indonesia correspondent Karishma Vaswani travels to Danang in central Vietnam, to find a city trying to escape the horrors of the American War and re-invent itself as a sustainable 21st century financial and tech powerhouse. Working Lives will be broadcast at 9.10 a.m. and 10.10 p.m. on August 24 and at 4.10 p.m. on August 25.
BBC presenter and journalist Justin Rowlatt meets five Vietnamese workers from across the income scale for this special edition. He explores whether the workforce is ready to help Vietnam make the move from one of the world’s fastest growing emerging economies, to a modern industrialized economy and propel it further into the 21st century.
Fast Track will be screened at 6.30 p.m and 8.30 p.m. on August 24 and at 1.30 a.m. and 1.30 p.m. on August 25. Rajan Datar in Click explores how Vietnam is turning its past into future success. He explores the America War-era bunker deep beneath one of Hanoi’s top hotels, discovers the art of noodle cuisine in ancient Hoi An, and finds out what the six star resort on the former prison colony island of Con Dao now offers to very different kinds of guests than those imprisoned there in French colonial days. Click will be aired at 1.30 p.m. on August 24 and 2.30 a.m., 10.30 a.m. and 8.30 p.m. on August 25.
In HCMC, reporter LJ Rich explores the hi-tech startup culture as Vietnam seeks to develop a bigger hi-tech sector in order to remain competitive in the international arena.
In addition, throughout this season Chief Business Correspondent Linda Yueh will be presenting reports on Vietnam, including live interviews from August 19-23, for the channel’s regular news programs, covering stories and questioning the people who shape the country’s business world.
