Nhan Dan Online- A workshop was held in Hanoi on September 26 for domestic and international health workers and experts to share experiences on cervical cancer screening methods in Vietnam.

The event, which was held by the German Development Co-operation GIZ together with its partners from the Administration for Medical Services (AMS), the Ministry of Health (MoH), saw the participation of experts from the MoH and the GIZ, practitioners from provincial and district health facilities, international and non-governmental organisations as well as national research and medical institutions.

Delegates at the workshop provided profound expertise and insight knowledge on current challenges, prevention and treatment measures regarding cervical cancer in Vietnam and the region. The event also fosters the exchange of ideas and facilitates implementation of activities to diagnose cervical cancer at an early stage, thus representing a valuable contribution to women health in Viet Nam.

Cervical cancer represents the second highest cancer mortality cause among Vietnamese women due to late detection and diagnosis. As a response to this challenge, the health programme has agreed with its partners to include cervical cancer screening into the diverse range of activities that will be implementedin the five GIZ partner provinces of Phu Yen, Thanh Hoa, Yen Bai, Nghe An and Thai Binh where 17% to 36% of the population are considered poor.

‘Cervical cancer is an important issue in women health care, not only in Vietnam, but worldwide. By sharing experiences on different screening methods, participants are contributing to the workshops’ success that will lead to improved cervical cancer prevention in Vietnam in the future’, Anna Frisch, Programme Director commented on the importance of organising the workshop.

The Vietnamese-German Development Co-operation’s health programme ‘Strengthening Provincial Health Systems’ has supported Vietnamese partners since 2009 and is commissioned and funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Co-operation and Development (BMZ). On behalf of BMZ, the programme is implemented by GIZ. During the implementation period from 2013 to 2015, the programme aims at strengthening the capacity of provincial Departments of Health and decentralised health facilities in cost efficient health management and needs-based delivery of quality health services, with a major focus on preventive and curative services for women living in poverty-affected areas.
