Beaten 3-1 in the men’s doubles match today, Vietnam conceded a 2-1 loss to Pakistan after three opening matches at the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Zone Group II taking place in Da Lat, Vietnam.

The Vietnamese duo Le Quoc Khanh / Ngo Quang Huy was beaten 6/1 6/1 by Pakistani couple Qureshi Aisam / Aqeel Khan in the two first games before rising up to win 7/5 in the third game. However, it was all the host team could do to treat the Pakistani duo, as in the fourth game, the Vietnamese lost 2/6 and accepted the 3-1 loss.

Yesterday, Vietnam drew Pakistan 1-1 after the two men’s singles matches yesterday when Ngo Quang Huy of Vietnam lost 0/6 4/6 3/6 to Pakistani Aqeel Khan and Hoang Thien leveled it after beating Muhammad Abid 6/3 6/2 6/0.

Vietnam and Pakistan will have two other men’s singles matches on February 16, the last competition day of the two teams, to decide the final victory.

It is planned that Hoang Thien will face Aqeel Khan and Quang Huy to take on Muhammad Abid. However, both teams can change their competitors within an hour before the start of the matches.

Earlier, Vietnamese youth tennis player Ly Hoang Nam dropped out of the national team to train in Thailand when the team was preparing to take on Pakistan amid disputes between local sports authorities and his club.

Vietnam Tennis Federation (VTF) deputy chairman Nguyen Quoc Ky said, “VTF contacted his club Becamex IDC many times but no result. He will likely be punished.”

“VTF actually doesn’t want to fine him and doesn’t want to create a bad precedent, either,” he added.

In the meantime, Becamex IDC director Le Viet Cuong replied that, “We sent VTF document to inform the absence of Nam at Davis Cup because Nam is not a senior player to take part in such a competition and because of the fear of injury.”

“His training plan was prepared ahead of the tournament.”

Nam and his two club teammates Mai Thanh Dong and Nguyen Hoang Hai arrived in Thailand on Feb.13.
