The commune has exploited 1,000 tonnes of sea products a year. Notably, it has been developing community-based tourism, attracting thousands of tourists.
Speaking highly of the commune’s socio-economic development, the President asked local authority and people to try their best to develop sea economy, improve locals’ living standards and make the commune as a typical one of the country, as well as ensure security-defence and do better its important role in the national waters in the northeastern region.
On the occasion, he recalled Uncle Ho’s visit to Ngoc Vung Island in 1962.
In his visit to Co To town in Co To island district, President Truong Tan Sang offered incense to Late President Ho Chi Minh at a commemorative area and listened to the local socio-economic development reported by the district’s leaders.
Consisting of 50 islands of different sizes, the fishing district has more than 5,000 people. Connected to the national power grid, the district is now focusing on providing fresh water, covering wifi and introducing digital television to locals. It welcomed 56,000 visitors in 2013 and is expected to receive over 100,000 visitors this year. The district’s party committee has issued many resolutions on defence-security, combat readiness and patrol to protect national sovereignty.
Commending the district’s efforts to improve local infrastructure, Sang highly appreciated its preservation of ecosystem and vegetation, laying a good foundation to develop economy, tourism and defence.
Sang also laid stress on the national marine strategy in which Co To plays an important role. He requested ministries and departments to assist the district’s development.
He believed that Co To island district would become a key fisheries logistics and tourism centre in Quang Ninh province in the near future and reminded the district to pay much attention to building a strong political system, ensuring security and defence, building peaceful, friendly and cooperative border lines with other border and island districts in the province.
During his trip, the President also visited the Mong Duong Thermal Power Plant project and acknowledged efforts of investors, engineers and workers.
