PANO – Germany has successfully concluded the drive on humanitarian support to clearunexploded ordnance (UXOs) left behind from the war in the Central provinces of Vietnam, said a representative of the German Embassy to Vietnam on September 25th.
Since 1998, the total cost that the German Government has supported to clear post-war UXOs in these localities, such as Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Thua Thien-Hue, reached €16 million.
Accordingly, the German Solidarity Service International Non-Government Organization (SODI) had teamed up with the Vietnam People’s Army and local authorities to locate and deactivate thousands of UXOs in the region, making great contributions to the local socio-economic development.
Since the Belgian Non-Governmental Organization APOPO took over the project from the SODI in January 2014, nearly 9 hectares of UXO-contaminated land in these provinces were cleared and turned into resettlement areas and farming land, and for reconstructing local infrastructure.
