ACDFIM-12: Chief of the General Staff starts meetings in Malaysia

PANO – Sr. Lt. Gen. Do Ba Ty, Chief of General Staff, Deputy Defence Minister of Vietnam, and entourage on February 9th arrived in Malaysia to join the 12th ASEAN Chiefs of Defense Forces Informal Meeting (ACDFIM-12).

The Vietnamese officer was received by Chief of Malaysian Defence Forces, General Tan Sri Zulkifeli Bin Mohd Zin. The host welcomed the guest and thanked Vietnam for its support for Malaysia in its ASEAN chairmanship.

The host also thanked Vietnam for the country’s wholehearted support in the search for the plane MH370 that went missing in March 2014, providing Malaysia with higher determination in the disaster’s consequence relief. At the same time, the host expressed his wish to learn from the experience of the Vietnam People’s Army in logistics provision and other fields.


For his part, the guest highlighted the achievements that Malaysian people and armed forces have gained recently, citing that both countries share various similar features, which will help further develop their friendship and cooperation. The two sides have made and will make more contributions to building an ASEAN community by the end of 2015. The guest proposed that the two sides should promote cooperation in all fields, especially in search and rescue at sea.

During the talks, the two sides reviewed the realization of the contents outlined in the defence memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Vietnam and Malaysia in 2008 and defence cooperation over the past time in such fields as delegation exchange, search and rescue, training cooperation, etc. The two generals agreed to boost the cooperation in the MoU to further the friendship, contributing to building an ASEAN community.


The same day, the guest met with Malaysian Minister of Defence Hishammuddin Hussein and extended the greetings from Vietnam’s National Defence Minister to the Malaysian counterpart. The guest highly appreciated the contribution of Minister Hishammuddin Hussein to improving the friendship between the two armies, and hoped that he would continue the efforts for the common development of the two armies in particular, and the two countries in general.

The Malaysian Minister, for his part, appreciated the Vietnamese delegation in joining ACDFIM-12 held in Malaysia, expressing hopes that the two armies would enhance cooperation to build an ASEAN community. He stressed that learning from the experience of Vietnam, Malaysia will actively and successfully organize important events of ASEAN in 2015 as the country took over the chairmanship.
