PANO – The Council for Vietnamese outstanding young face awards in 2014 has announced a list of 20 outstanding youths for the public to choose 10 most outstanding ones. The selection process will last till March 15th and the list of the top ten will be made public the same day.
The award, which is considered an honor for the young, will be presented by the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union to outstanding individuals in acknowledgement of their effective contributions in their specific field.
Following are the 20 nominees:1, Pham Tuan Huy , born in 1996, is a student of the University of Natural Science under the Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City.
He won two golds at the International Math Olympiad in 2013 and 2014 as well as other certificates and prizes during his academic years at schools.
In 2013, Huy was named one of the most outstanding young citizens in the city.
2, Nguyen Cong Tuan , born in 1995, is a student in the Hung Yen province’s Electro-mechanics and Irrigation Vocational Training College.
He pocketed first prizes at the national skills competitions and also 10th ASEAN Skills Competition in 2014 to help Vietnam rank first at the event.
Tuan also won the Tran Van On Award, established by the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee to honor excellent students from vocational training schools nationwide.
3, Dr. Truong Quoc Phong , born in 1979, is the Head of Proteomics Lab, under the Institute of Biological and Food Technology of the Hanoi University of Science and Technology.
Last year, he won a golden globe award, honoring young individuals with scientific research studies in information technology & communications, pharmacy & medicine, and biological & environmental technology.
He chaired two highly-acclaimed State-level study projects and was author and co-author of 25 articles and studies published abroad.
4, Dr. Phan Minh Liem , born in 1983, is President of the Graduate Student Association of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Centre since 2010. He is the first international president of the centre over its 73-year history.
He got noble certificates by the US Congress and Department of Defence for his researches on cancer, Sylvan Rodriguez/Cancer Answers Award Scholarship, and other prizes by the University of Texas.
The 15 scientific projects on biotechnology and cancer of his research group have been published on international magazines.
5, Fisherman Le Van Sang , born in 1985, has owed the biggest number of fishing and logistic trawlers in the Central region of Vietnam.
He is the owner and also captain of steel-hulled fishing boat “Sang Fish”, equipped with a radar system, a GSP machine, a magnetic compass, a portable two-way transceiver, and other advanced navigation equipment.
The fisherman has closely worked with local ship owners to encourage them to head to the sea to ensure the stable income for fishermen and to contribute to protecting the traditional fishing grounds and national sovereignty.
In 2014, he was conferred with a merit certificate by the Da Nang City Border Guard Command for achievements in defending the national sovereignty, a certificate by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, and Luong Dinh Cua Award.
The Luong Dinh Cua Award is annually given to 100 outstanding young farmers throughout the country to acknowledge their dedication and determination and contributions to poverty alleviation and national development.
6, Captain Le Trung Thanh , born in 1983, is captain of ship CSB 4033 of the Coast Guard Region 2 Command under the Vietnam Coast Guard.
The “CSB 4033″ has actively supported many Vietnamese fishermen’s trawlers fishing at high sea.
It was also one of the first ships to approach the site where China had illegally dispatched its oil rig Haiyang Shiyou 981 to Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf last year.
Besides, it was the first ship damaged by Chinese vessels. Immediately after being repaired, the ship got back the scene to continue the mission of defending the national sovereignty over sea and islands.
7, Captain Pham Van Son , born in 1982, is the captain of ship HQ 375, Brigade 162, Naval Region 4 of the Vietnam People’s Navy.
Last year, Captain Son received an array of certificates by the Navy and Ministry of National Defence for his outstanding fulfillment of his assigned tasks, and a merit certificate by the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee for well responding to the campaign “Learning and following Ho Chi Minh moral example”.
8, Major Phan Manh Hung , born in 1979, is Head of the Drug-related Crime Investigation Department of the Nghe An province’s Police Department.
He directly set up plans and led his comrades to bust many cases, arresting tens of suspects and a great amount of heroin, cannabis and amphetamine.
In 2013, he was presented with the Third-class Feat of Arms Order by the State President and honored as one of outstanding officers of the Ministry of Public Security.
9, Captain Dang Manh Cuong , born in 1979, is the Head of the Team for Investigation of Social Order-Related Crimes of Hanoi’s Nam Tu Liem district Police.
Last year, officer Cuong was conferred with the Third-class Feat of Arms Order by the State President, a certificate by the Minister of Public Security, a certificate by the Hanoi Police Director, and the award “Outstanding faces in the Hanoi Police Department”.
He directed his men to quash 125 cases to arrest 338 law offenders, making contributions to maintaining local social order.
10, Athlete Duong Thuy Vi , born in 1993, is known as the “golden girl” of Vietnam’s Wushu. At the age of 21, she dominated all domestic and international competitions.
Particularly, Vi was the only Vietnamese athlete to win a gold at the ASIAD 17 held in Incheon, the Republic of Korea, in September 2014, marking an important milestone in her career.
Up to now, she has brought over 60 medals from regional and international tournaments to the homeland.
Last year, she was named one of Hanoi’s outstanding young faces.
11, Weightlifter Thach Kim Tuan was born in 1994.
In June 2014, he set two new world records at the World Junior Championships in Athletics in Kazan, the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia. Thus, he was selected the best athlete at this competition by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF).
In September 2014, he bagged a silver medal at the men’s 56kg category of the Asian Games (ASIAD 17) in Incheon, the Republic of Korea, and then claimed a gold at the IWF’s World Championships 2014 in Kazakhstan.
12, Pianist Quach Hoang Nhi , born in 2004, is a fifth grader at the Nam Thanh Cong primary school in Hanoi. She has won tens of medals at piano competitions at home and abroad so far.
13, Ngo Hong Quang , born in 1983, is a musician who can play many traditional musical accessories like Vietnamese two-chord fiddle, monochord, and drum.
He has contributed to introducing Vietnamese traditional music to international friends.
In 2014, he received a full two-year scholarship to study Vietnamese traditional music and European modern music at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Den Haag, the Netherlands.
14, Dr. Nguyen Ba Hai , born in 1984, is a lecturer at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education.
Recently, the Vietnam Youth Federation and National Volunteer Centre, in association with the Kien Binh Minh Co. Ltd. handed over 30 digital glasses to blind veterans and poor students in Hanoi to help them actually see.
It is the latest version, called “Mat than II” (The Magic Eye II), made by Hai and his co-workers last year. Till date, about 210 “Mat than II” were granted to people with visual impair nationwide.
He was named one of outstanding young citizens in Ho Chi Minh City in 2012.
15, Ms. Nguyen Thuy Tien , born in 1988, is a co-founder, manager and coordinator of the Breast Cancer Network Vietnam.
Thuy Tien’s colleagues and she herself have held 12 seminars to provide information on the cancer to local patients, and launched fund-raising activities to present them with silicone breasts and artificial hair, and to allow them join the rehabilitation programs.
16, Sin Van Duong , a Thai ethnic minority person, was born in 1980. Duong had started developing household economy with only VND 100 million and could earn between VND 40-50 million a year.
Basing on these successes, Duong mobilized his peers to set up a club “Youths well do business”, to make Thai ethnic minority group’s traditional cakes to obtain annual profit of VND 450 million.
Duong was presented with the Luong Dinh Cua Award in 2014 and many merit certificates by local authorities so far.
17, Nguyen Xuan Truong , born in 1988, is a worker at Workshop KT12 of the Vinacomin – Vang Danh Coal Joint Stock Company.
Last year, he was named one of the outstanding faces in Quang Ninh province, and one of top 20 outstanding men for well responding to the campaign “Youths follow Uncle Ho’s teachings”.
In 2013 and 2014, he made some initiatives to contribute to improve work conditions and increase productivity, bringing benefit of VND 4.5 billion to his company.
18, Tran Xuan Phong , born in 1983, is Head of a collective of beekeepers in Phong Tho district, Tuyen Quang province.
At present, the collective owns 1,500 wooden boxes with bee populations, giving stable jobs for 22 local workers with monthly income of VND 3-4 million.
Last year, he was granted the Luong Dinh Cua Award and merit certificates by the provincial People’s Committee for well doing business.
19, Nguyen Van Son , born in 1986, is Director of Thai Nguyen province Branch of the military-run telecom group Viettel, under the Ministry of National Defence.
With good sense of doing business, Son had helped the branch extend local market and gain total revenue of nearly VND 1 trillion last year, a year-on-year increase of over 11 per cent.
Also in that year, he got many merit certificates by the Ministry of National Defence and Viettel Group. Notably, he won the title “Emulation Soldier” in four consecutive years from 2010.
20, Trang Seo Pao , born in 1983, a H’mong ethnic minority person, is Vice Chairman of People’s Committee in Hoang Thu Pho commune, Bac Ha district, Lao Cai province.
After graduating from the Hanoi Architectural University, he returned to his native village to help local people develop economy.
He has mobilized his people to upgrade over 4km of traffic roads, and construct 200 water closets and 220 cattle breeding facilities, contributing to improve their living standards.
